Business Structure

Choose the form your business will take, whether sole proprietorship, corporation or nonprofit. You may want to consult your attorney or accountant for advice on this. In any case, you should open a checking account for the study club and keep the finances separate from your practice. Do not co-mingle funds, even if your practice subsidizes the club (show the transfer as a loan to the study club). A separate checking account allows your members to write their checks to the club rather than to your practice, which is a subtle but powerful distinction.

Your coach will help you plan your first year, and you’ll take progressively more control of the planning process as you gain experience. Your first year will include an introduction to Seattle Study Club clinical sessions, basic and more advanced restorative courses, lab lectures, new product introductions, general implant courses, and practice management lectures. Presentations are made by local and national speakers, and will include evening and dinner sessions, full-day courses, and staff training sessions.

Sessions are held September through May or June, with the last meeting being practice management oriented. At that meeting you will also announce plans for the following academic year, which means you will have started planning for the next year about mid-way through the current year.
